Okay...I know I said no sneak peeks. But, I am just too excited! Here's a look at the progress on the bookshelves. This was earlier in the week before the crown molding was added and prior to the first coast of paint. I LOVE them.

Master Bedroom "Before"

Remember how I mentioned that we are FINALLY decorating our Master Bedroom? Well, I am SO excited to report that we've made a lot of progress. (No pictures until it's done!) Ryan has been hard at work constructing built-in bookshelves and I got the Pottery Barn Napa Chair and Lidded Barrel Basket for my birthday. Still on our list:

rug
bench/chest/baskets for the end of the bed
tiebacks for the drapes
swing arm lamp for above the chair
writing desk
accessories for desk/shelves
remove giant black armoire

While that seems like a lot, we are making really good progress and I hope to have it complete in the next few weeks. To make myself accountable for that statement, I am going to share the before pictures below.

Remember how I was trying 3 new Pinterest recipes last week? I am happy to report that I followed through! You already heard my reflections on the Mexican Chicken Casserole. Here is my review of the other two:

Slow Cooker Honey Sesame Chicken

I would say...eh. It's okay. In all fairness, I did mess up the recipe a little. The directions say to cook it on low for 3-4 hours or high for 1.5-2.5 hours. In the daze of my sinus infection last week, I cooked it on high for 4 hours. Whoops. Let's just say that the chicken was VERY browned. Luckily, thanks to cooking it in the crock pot, it was not charred and was still edible.

I just didn't really like it. However, I am not really a sweet sauce person. Ryan liked it (while admitting it would be better if a little less....cooked) and thought we should try it again. I served the leftovers to my mom, aunt, and cousin on Thursday, and they all liked it too. (Aren't I so nice? Serving leftovers to house guests?)

Grade: B-

Zucchini, Rice, and Black Bean Skillet

Yum! (With some additions.) This is what I love about blogging. I posted that I was going to make this, and Ryan's sweet Aunt Sheila in Houston sent me a note to tell me that she'd had friends who had tried the recipe and that they recommended the following:

Use the entire zucchini, more bell pepper and Pete's Hot Sauce
Add 2 zucchini, 1 red and 1 green bell pepper, "fiesta" corn, green chilies, half an onion diced, lime and cilantro. She also added that next time she would add another can of black beans to give more protein.

I was all geared up to add more black beans, another pepper, green chilis, and lime--- but I TOTALLY forgot to stop at the store during my ~~daze~~ drive home. So, I had to use what I had on hand. I added 2 extra zucchini, the entire green pepper, and a whole onion. I also spilled my entire thing of instant rice on the floor (it was a great night), so I had to use the Trader Joe's seasoned rice I had on hand.

The result was pretty delicious. (Sorry-- I forgot to snap a picture!) And, I absolutely LOVED how easy this meal was to throw together. I think it took me all of 15-20 minutes. (Note: My veggies were chopped on Sunday when I prepped for the week.)

The flavor of this recipe was definitely more Italian savory, and I think I was expecting more of a Mexican skillet. So for next time, I plan to add more black beans, substitute the fire-roasted tomatoes for diced tomatoes with green chilis, and add cilantro and lime. (Ryan really liked it -- but he suggested that adding some sort of meat-- pork, sausage, bacon, shredded chicken -- would make it extra delish.)

Grade: A+ (with the changes)

Weekend Update

Oh hi there, neglected blog. I promise to become a more regular blogger one of these days...

This weekend was both busy and relaxing all at once.

Saturday morning we visited with my parents and my grandma ,who was in town from Florida. As usual when my parents are here, Ryan and I dragged them from room to room soliciting advice on everything from frame sizes to bookcase construction to furniture placement. (I'm pretty blessed to have an interior decorator mom and extremely handy dad and husband!)

The rest of the afternoon consisted of running errands to Home Goods and Home Depot. (To all of my MBA friends at Home Depot-- we had the most helpful, friendly experience ever. I know it must be all of your hard work at the corporate office!)

That night we met up with our dear friends, Maggie and Tim (also an employee of the big orange box!) to devour burgers and shakes at Flip Burger. (Yes, for the second time this week. Yes, we have a problem...)

Though Saturday was fun and relaxing, Sunday was the type of productive day that, though busy, is also energizing and extremely satisfying. After church and a quick trip the grocery store, we got down to business.

For me, getting down to business meant taking down my winter decor, redecorating the vacated spaces, serving as Ryan's construction assistant (more on this later), prepping meals for the week, and cooking dinner.

In what I may later deem an overzealous effort, I am attempting three new Pinterest recipes this week: Mexican Chicken Casserole, Slow Cooker Honey Sesame Chicken, and Zucchini, Black Bean, and Rice Skillet. To make my week easier (and it more likely that I cook during the week), I went ahead and sliced, diced, and prepped everything I need for the meals this week:

Throughout the day, I was on call as Ryan's construction assistant, as he started building the bookshelves I've been wanting for our bedroom today. (Back in January, we met with my mom and put together a design plan for our room. Look for the "before" pictures soon!) Check out my skills on the table saw!

Finally, I got started on my first Pinterest recipe of the week. First up? The Mexican Chicken Casserole. We have small group on Mondays, so I needed a recipe that produced yummy leftovers for tomorrow night. The recipe took about 45 minutes of hands-on time (which was a little longer than I expected) and then 30 minutes of cook time.

The result? Served on a plate, the dish looks like a yellow and white pile of mush (forgot to snap a photo!). However, it tastes delicious and is a low-calorie Cooking Light meal. Ryan loved it.

Consensus? Let's keep this one in the rotation.

Cara's Questions:

1. If you could have someone do one chore for you for the rest of your life,

what chore would it be?

Easy. Mop the floor. I hate mopping. Like really hate it. Vacuuming? Easy breezy. Too bad for me that we have a lot of hardwoods. That sounds super-complainy. I love our house. Just not mopping.

2. Which song do you always sing at-the-top-of-your-lungs-super-loud-yelling style in your car?

Adele - Someone Like You. I can't help but belt it out every time it comes on the radio. Which is a lot. This is most unfortunate to anyone who happens to be in the car with me. To say that I cannot carry a tune is an understatement. That does not stop me with this song. It's just too soulful to not be shared at full volume.

3. Publix or Kroger?

Publix. Hands down. My husband and I frequently debate this with friends. Publix has a MUCH better bakery, meat/seafood selection, and better produce. Pair that with the super-friendly staff, zero wait time, being walked out to my car, and the fact that my Publix is a Publix Greenwise Market (aka, competes with FreshMarket and Whole Foods at Publix prices). How can Kroger compete?

**Note: I am also a huge fan of Costco and do half of our weekly shopping there**

4. What instrument do you wish you could play?

Piano. I am not cool enough for guitar, but I think that I could pull off the piano.

5. What did you eat for breakfast?

We had a fun coffee/breakfast date at The Library with our small group friends Tim and Ashley before work today. I devoured a bowl of oatmeal with dried cranberries and a little brown sugar. Yum.

6. If you had to buy your clothes from one store for the rest of your life,

what store would you choose?

Tough. I would probably say J.Crew. Classic, yet stylish with lots of fun, bright colors. I would like to say Anthro -- but I don't think that I can carry that look off all of the time.

7. What is one quirky thing you do that others may find strange?

Eeek. I don't know? Maybe that I let my coffee get lukewarm before actually drinking it? Or that for every party I host I type up a 5+ page "party plan" complete with menu, decor, "to do", responsibilities delegated? I don't know...

8. What TV show is your guilt pleasure?

The Bachelor. I don't really watch reality TV -- but the ridiculousness of this show (and the awesome destinations) has me hooked. I know that it's over-produced and so many fake surprises -- but all the drama sucks me in. It's all about love ;)

9. What is your favorite season of the year?

Spring. I like that everything is new and green and like a fresh beginning. Plus, it holds all of the anticipation of summer. It's like how Christmas Eve is actually better than Christmas due to the anticipation.

10. When was the last time you felt homesick?

Not in a very long time. Maybe when I interned in NYC after my junior year of college? I loved New York and the experience -- but I missed the South.

11. If you could be best-friends with a celebrity, who would he/she be?

My celebrity best friends club is getting pretty long these days. I think I would have to say Carrie Underwood, probably. First of all, we are both excellent singers (see #2). And second, she just seems really nice and down-to-earth. We went to a Predators hockey game in Nashville over Christmas, but Carrie was nowhere to be seen. She probably didn't realize that I would be there ;)

Lindsay's Questions:

1. When you were 5 years old, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A CEO. I don't even think I knew what this meant -- except that you got to be boss. I liked that.

2. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I love traveling and have been very fortunate to visit so many places. If funds were no object, I would probably say Bora Bora. (Just in case you want to take me on a second honeymoon, Ryan!)

3. If you could go back to high school and revive one fashion trend, what would it be?

Goodness. None of them. So terrible. My husband would say those stretchy black Express pants circa 2001. They are now called yoga pants and more appropriately worn to the gym. Not parties.

4. What is the weirdest food you have ever tried?

I get to travel to Asia frequently for work -- so this list is pretty long. I would probably go with Sea Cucumber though. It was fresh. Very fresh. As in, an old woman in Korea dove down into the sea and brought it up...and I ate it. It's a tradition. Check it out on CNN. (And, yes, it was very rubbery.) I also had cow tongue in China -- but that was a complete accident. That dish was NOT Mongolian beef.

5. If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you buy?

Vacation house on the coast. I love the beach.

6. A picture is worth 1,000 words... what's your favorite?

Our amazing wedding photographer, Renee Brock, took this during our first dance back in 2009. Best day of my life.

7. If you could eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Yogurt. I love it and never get tired of it. Maybe that should have been my quirk?

8. What's the one thing you wish your parents would have let you do when you were a kid?

When I was a kid, I really wish that they let me eat white bread, potato chips, pop tarts, and sugar cereal. Now that I am an adult -- thank Goodness they didn't! Smart decision, guys.

9. NSYNC or Backstreet Boys?

NSYNC. Is that even really a question?

10. Favorite thing that happened in 2011?

What I should say: Finishing grad school.

The truth: Our anniversary trip to Italy.

Seriously, my MBA was an invaluable experience, and I gained so much from the program -- a wider breadth of business knowledge, a business plan for a new venture, a large professional network, and some great friends. Vacation is vacation though, and I love travel.

11. And what are you hoping for in 2012?

Cheesy-- but to enjoy every moment.

Cookie Party

Happy New Year! Our holidays turned pretty hectic with the combination of travel, out-of-town guests, and a nasty cold -- so I am just getting back to the blog. I am working on a couple of posts and hope to be less sporadic in the new year. For today, however, my mom prepared a guest post about our recent return visit to DC (this time WITH husbands) for my Aunt Lynne's annual cookie party. Enjoy!

In Wendy's Words...

Each year, my sister hosts a Christmas Cookie Open House for family, friends, neighbors and work associates. After hearing rumors that this might be the last year for the extravaganza, Ashley and I (along with Ken and Ryan) decided to make the journey to Alexandria to attend this year’s festivities.

After several days of sightseeing in D.C.,

Operation Cookie Party Preparation began!

Cookies were unloaded from two freezers at the house and an overflow freezer at the school where Lynne teaches. She stopped counting at 350 dozen!

Last minute touches were added to varieties that didn’t freeze well.

Saturday morning, arranging all the cookies on serving pieces was a major undertaking. Lynne has a huge collection of milk glass that she uses every year to display the cookies.

Ashley carefully arranges the ribbon cookies with all the stripes lined up in the same order.

We had to stop Grandma Britt from prying apart the cookies that were stuck together; Lynne had carefully sandwiched the chocolate stars together with raspberry preserves.

With everyone dressed in their festive attire, we began removing the saran wrap at 12:30 in anticipation of the 1:00 start time

Party Time!

The green and red color scheme of their home makes for very festive Christmas décor.

While the dining room held the most cookies, they were everywhere throughout the house.

We held the party at my house -- but the details of the day were the mastermind of my sister-in-law Paige, my mom, and her mom, Sandra. Everything turned out so cute -- they did an amazing job!

Genius! Stocking Rods

Stocking Rods! Seriously -- this is an amazing idea for your Christmas decor as you get ready for the holidays. My mom found this idea from South House Designs on Pinterest and posted it to our Facebook wall.

When you have more than 2-3 stockings to hang by the chimney with care, the mantel fills up quickly. Most stocking holders on the market are bulky and can takeaway from the overall look of your mantlescape. Enter Two stocking hooks and a run of the mill curtain rod. With these three items you can hang multiple stockings from the fireplace with ease. Don't have a mantel? Hang the rod from a window sill, entry table or hutch. I love it! Just have a few stockings to hang but don't like the traditional stocking holders? (That's me!) Last year, I ordered mantel clips like these from Target in the oil rubbed bronze finish for our two stockings. I like that they blend in without interfering with my decor. Thanksgiving at Mom & Dad's

When you are one of four kids who have spouses (who are one of three or four kids themselves), significant others, and kids of their own, scheduling is....well, CRAZY. My parents worked around our schedules and planned a Thanksgiving meal at their house last Sunday.

We had all the traditional fare; and for the first year, all of the kids brought something to share. I happily contributed homemade sweet potato souffle (sans marshmallows, add pecans) and pumpkin pie. I got too caught up in ogling over the adorableness of my niece and nephew (and eating) that I did not take any pictures of our elaborate meal.

I did, however, snag a few shots of my mom's dining room decor for any of you looking for last minute centerpiece ideas of your own. This year, my mom went with simple, yet beautiful. (I say simple, because decor in past years have involved such things as my mom drilling holes in over-sized gourds to make gourd vases to line the table. There you go. Now you see where I get my ~~craziness~~ creativeness.)

She started with an over-sized wooden bowl and filled it with all things fall: extra large pine cones, deer antlers from our recent Scotts trip, cabbage planted in ceramic gourd pots, acorns, and decorative balls with fall-like textures (ie, twine, wicker, and feathers).

These photos are very deceiving in terms of scale. The table the centerpiece rests on is a large square that seats 12 people with 3 on each size. To give you some perspective, see that large wicker ball in the back? That has about a 12'' diameter. Those pine cones are about 12'' long as well.

My parents have a fantastically versatile dining room chandelier. Essentially, the center is a glass vase that allows them to change out the look from season-to-season (or dinner party-to-dinner party in my mom's case). I love that the seasonal decor is not limited to the table and sideboard.

For Thanksgiving, she filled the bottom of the vase with horse chestnuts she collected while visiting my grandmothers in Michigan. The green leafy stuff (sorry it's so dark!) is more cabbage to continue the look from the table. She added a few sprigs of red berries from their yard to finish the look. This room is so gorgeous when all of the surrounding candles (and the wall of candles behind it!) are lit.

Finally, my mom had her china cabinet all decked out for ~~her Halloween party~~ Thanksgiving. Note that your buffet or china cabinet need not be limited to the traditional items: dishes, candlesticks, and serving ware. She has glass cloches, antique bottles, books, and interesting antique finds (such as that iron bathtub foot on the second shelf). My favorite part of this display, however, is the top. On the left, she has a grouping that includes a large wicker tray, a wicker covered glass jar, and beautiful green and white pot. On the right, she has a beautiful antique scale weighing...what else? A pumpkin!

Ryan and I are celebrating Thanksgiving with his wonderful family in Nashville this year -- with one dinner tonight and a Thanksgiving lunch tomorrow. The turkey is currently brining in the fridge -- and we will drop it in our Big Easy Oil-less Turkey Fryer this afternoon. Yummy!

Fall Decorations..Sort Of.

I know that I promised to show you my Fall decorations; however, Sunday I was confronted by THIS before I could take pictures.

That's right. My husband was overcome by holiday spirit and pulled out all of the Christmas decor. Whoops. (Secretly, I am happy. Every inch of my house is now Christmas-ified...and I love it. Another benefit? I was able to take inventory of things I need to buy to add to the decor, like large evergreen branches and outdoor wreaths, before the holidays get too crazy. Double bonus.)

Anyway, I was able to snap a few photos of the still intact fireplace and kitchen island. The rest will just have to wait until next year! I know, right? How will you sleep in anticipation for a whole year?

Recipe: Chocolate Dipped Peanut Butter Pretzel Cookies

Victory tastes so sweet! My beloved Georgia Bulldogs beat up on the defending National Champions, the Auburn Tigers, to continue our quest to win the SEC East (Sorry, Melissa!). All that stands between us now is a W over the Kentucky Wildcats next Saturday. Go Dawgs!

Ryan and I spent the day in Athens tailgating and cheering on our team with dear friends and family. (Hi, Liz & Lindsay!) A special thanks to my brother for providing an unfailingly fabulous tailgate setup.

What did I bring to share? After careful perusal of my Pinterest boards Friday, I decided to make these sweet treats: Chocolate Dipped Peanut Butter Pretzel Cookies. They were delicious! The recipe made 65 cookies -- and there was not a crumb left by game time. I guess that means everyone agreed with me?

(Side note: I actually discovered that I pinned the recipe twice...I guess that means they really sounded good to me.)

The original recipe was on the always delicious baking blog, Two Tiny Kitchens. I pretty much followed her recipe exactly (though a little less sugar). One thing to note if trying this out, I made the cookies the night before, and they definitely tasted better the next day. I am not sure why -- I guess that the flavors needed to meld together.

Ingredients

1 cup creamy peanut butter
2 tbsp softened butter
1/2 cup powdered sugar (give or take)
3/4 cup brown sugar (give or take)
Pretzels (you will need about 130 pretzels)
1 bag semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions
Step 1:
Combine peanut butter and butter in a large bowl with whisk a stand mixer. Add the sugars and mix to combine. If the filling rolls easily into balls without sticking to your hands (note: roll in your palm rather than your fingertips to reduce stickiness), you are ready for Step 2. If not, add a little more of each sugar until you reach a consistency that is easy to roll.

Step 2:
Roll filling into small balls (approximately 1 tsp), then sandwich them between two whole pretzels. When all the balls are rolled and sandwiched, place the tray in the freezer for about half an hour.

Step 3:
Pour the chocolate chips into a microwave-safe bowl and heat at 30-second intervals, stirring occasionally until completely melted. (Note: You will need the entire bag.) Remove the pretzel sandwiches from the freezer and quickly dip each cookie into the melted chocolate. When all are dipped, return the tray to the freezer to set up completely. Store the sandwiches in the refrigerator until serving time.

My friend Liz brought this tasty Fruit Salsa with Baked Cinnamon Chips. The fresh, crisp flavor of the fruit was such a nice change from your regular tailgate fare. I ate quite a bit of this too...

(Note: I am not sure if that's the exact recipe Liz uses -- but it is very similar. She says she uses all sorts of different fruit depending on what's in season.)

November Scott Antique Trip

Oh, Scott's. How I have missed you. I have not been to Scott's in at least 8 months. My mom shops Scott's every month for her clients and has all sorts of great inside knowledge-- so we like to go together. But, she only likes to go on Friday's when it's not as crowded or as picked over. Attending on Friday requires me to take a day off of work, which I can only do every so often. However, today's finds remind that it's completely worth it!

Great light green antique leather settee

I love the burlap and chicken wire combination used for these light shades.

Antique sleds were out in full force to prepare for the holidays. I adore the one I bought last year -- however, I did have to explain to my husband that he could not ACTUALLY use it during last January's snowstorm.

This booth had a huge array of antique game boards. These would be perfect framed in a playroom, media room, or kid's room!

I really liked the holiday displays in this booth using just silvers, greens, and brown. I snapped a few photos that I am going to try and recreate at my house this year. Antlers (see Leigh, they are in!) and greenery inside a lantern makes a simple, elegant winter display. My mom snagged a few antlers to use at her house.

We chatted with the gentleman from altered for quite a while -- he makes furniture and decorative accessories all out of church pews. They are AMAZING. See those two brown benches in front? They are from the same church -- the lighter one was near a window. He makes tables, chairs, benches, vases, candesticks, and more all out of the pews. So cool! His website is not up quite yet-- but I have his card if anyone is interested.

I saw these European olive picking buckets -- and it was love at first sight. (Despite their $59/each price tag!) They reminded me of our trip to the olive groves during our Italian vacation in May.

Alas! They were sold. Much to my luck, however, several other vendors were carrying them. I saw these olive buckets carried out of Scott's by patrons left and right. I purchased my own from one of my favorite outdoor vendors for...$35! These are selling on etsy.com for $75-$250 right now. What a steal!

Check out this antique double decanter carrier. Pottery Barn just added a reproduction of one of these to their new line. This would make a great Christmas gift for the special man in your life.

How sweet is this antique baby scale?

I'm a sucker for vintage baby blocks. The booth display spelled my father-in-law's name, Rex. I had to snap a picture! (For some reason, Blogger insists on displaying the photo sideways...)

A beautiful seafoam green chest to be used as a sideboard or dresser. See that white tag? It says sold. Merchandise was selling SO quickly today.

Owl andirons for in front of a fireplace. I bet these sold quickly given the popularity of owls in the design world.

Everywhere you looked vendors were carrying vintage suitcases. A few of these stacked makes a fabulous end table or bedside table. The cases in this stack ranged from $45-75 -- not bad!

Leigh, this is for you. You know...in case Ryan 2 doesn't know what to do with his deer feet. (Seriously, WHO would use this lamp?)

I am not always a huge fan of brass-- but there is something about this antique brass light fixture that I just love.

I was also surprised the bull grill was only priced at $675. Somehow, I thought that this beauty would be priced higher...

Last, but not least, how cool are these orb-shaped iron pieces? My mom wants to wire one as a light and hang it above her family room coffee table. I love the idea.

Weldon Loft: Master Bedroom & Bath

Finally...my favorite part of the Weldon's home: the serene and comfortable Master Bedroom and Bathroom. (See: Entryway, Living Room, Guest Bedroom & Bath, Kitchen & Dining) After a long day of dentistry, Ryan and Leigh can unwind in this beautiful space. I have a hard time picking my favorite part of the room -- I adore the framed (and symmetrical) artwork above and to the side of the bed. The monogrammed bedding is totally my style. I also love the new lamps and bench at the foot of the bed.

What's your favorite part?

Weldon Loft: Kitchen & Dining Room

Moving on from the entryway, living room, and guest bedroom &bathroom...we check out the kitchen and dining room at the Weldon's. The dining room in their loft opens to the kitchen, which allowed for our host and hostess to remain engaged with their guests (us!) while finishing brunch preparations. I am a big fan of open floor plans -- especially in the kitchen -- so that those of us who like to cook are able to feel a part of the action while trying out (or cleaning up from!) new recipes.

When first moving in, Leigh wasn't crazy about the green cabinetry in the kitchen. However, once the rest of the decor was in place -- she loved the warm, comfortable feel that the non-traditional cabinets gave the space. (To my dismay, I just realized that none of my photos show Ryan 2's beautiful stuffed turkey(?) that rests on top of the far right cabinet. The turkey(?) keeps the deer in good company.)

Leigh's mom and Aunt Susan found this dining room set at a local estate sale. The china cabinet proudly displays their gorgeous wedding china, while also providing storage for their many serving pieces. (Don't you love when things are aesthetic and functional?) Leigh felt that the dining room set was very traditional and formal when compared to the rest of her decor -- so she worked with her decorator to tone down the traditional. To do this, they recovered the seats of the side chairs with a coordinating fabric from the living room throw pillows and added simple monogrammed linen parsons chairs to the ends. Leigh also ordered long window panels from West Elm for her exceptionally high windows to add softness to the room.

Of course, I can't finish up this post without talking about Leigh's seasonal decor. (Seasonal decor -- my favorite!) She started with Pottery Barn's Linen Hemstitch Table Runner and an apothecary jar (given to her by Your's Truly). I personally love apothecary jars because they are so versatile. You can change their look from season-to-season (or in my case, mood-to-mood). I love how she lined the center with fall foliage and candles in the colors of autumn. Take special note of the cork tray. This was a little DIY project that Leigh took on using saved wine corks and a shadow box. It was perfect for holding our mimosa mixings!

Weldon Loft: Guest Bedroom & Bath

While we were visiting Rome, the boys played a friendly game of golf -- where the wager was a bed for the night. Weldon Loft: The Living Room

Welcome back to the Weldon's! I got derailed from showing you their beautiful home (remember Day 1?) when I headed down to Jacksonville to help these guys bring home a win over ~~their~~ our nemeses: the Florida Gators. (Bulldog fans -- you are welcome.)

Back to the Weldon's -- I am really excited to feature their gorgeous living room. This picture is taken from the dining room looking across the entryway. I love the open, airiness that the transoms above the doorway and oversize windows give the space.

Again, since this is not their permanent home, Leigh and Ryan wanted to use as much of their existing furniture as possible. Leigh loved these green couches for her town home during dental school, but now felt that they were not the right look for her "married home". Her decorator recommended updating the look by recovering pillows in coordinating fabrics and bringing in sophisticated accessories, lighting, and art.

I love how Leigh repurposed her dining room table. See that end table between the sofa and chair? Though its difficult to tell the scale from this picture, that was Leigh's kitchen table that comfortably sat four in her Augusta town home. Here in Rome, the table didn't seem to quite fit anywhere-- until it was suggested that she use it as an end table. I LOVE how it looks in the space. I think that anything smaller would not have looked to scale with her oversized furniture and high ceilings.

Also, notice the HUGE piece of art hanging on the wall. I truly think that the art pulls the palette of the entire room together and acts as a stunning focal point.

See how the sophisticated fabric print really updates the sofa?

The TV sits opposite of the sofa (duh, a boy lives here). The media console is the only new piece of furniture that Leigh and Ryan purchased for their living room. This piece was worth investing in due to its versatility in any new home -- it can continue to be used as a media console, an entryway table, or as a library table behind a floating sofa.

Leigh's mom (hi, Ms. Joy!) found those great blue leather chairs at a local estate sale. They are not only beautiful, but they add additional seating in the room without taking up much real estate.

I adore this room and think that they did a great job making it feel very "adult" while still comfortable and "homey". Stay tuned for Part 3, the Guest Bedroom & Bath.

Weldon Loft: The Entryway

Yesterday, I wrote about our relaxing weekend spent in Rome visiting dear friends. However, I would be doing you a disservice if I did not give you a tour of the Weldon's stunning loft in the downtown district. They are on the top floor (read: high ceilings and great views!) of a historic building overlooking the beautiful sites of the city -- charming main street, the old clocktower, the river, and more.

Leigh wanted their new place to be a welcoming and comfortable home. But, knowing that this was not their "forever home" -- she wanted to work with the furniture they already owned and update the look with accessories, lighting, pillows, and artwork. To do so, she worked with a local Rome designer.

First up? The entryway. This dramatic entryway sets the tone for the entire loft. Leigh's husband, an avid hunter, had one request for their first home together: his first buck had to hang on the wall. He agreed to store the other bucks, gators, ducks, etc -- but this buck was a must. (See the priority he placed on the buck when they moved to Rome!)

Leigh was not excited about bringing the outdoors into her decor-- but she conceded to his only request. We had many conversations about ways to incorporate/hide the looming deerhead. Like this pin I showed her on Pinterest. (Technically, animal is in!) Leigh was even less excited when she discovered that the only place the buck really fit was in the entryway. The first thing guests would see. Great.

Fast forward a few months and enter her decorator. He accessorized around the deer and her existing console table to create a stunning entry. He created a symmetrical look with a two-toned mirror flanked by lamps with enough height to balance the tall ceilings.

The driftwood accessory, the only other natural element in the arrangement, ties the deer into the look nicely.

The upholstered bench adds weight to the entry display -- and also gives Leigh additional storage (for such important items as wrapping supplies).

To personalize the space, Leigh put together a gallery wall on the left side of the entry that includes an engagement photo, portraits from their wedding day, their wedding invitation, and a rendering of the church where they were married. (Conveniently, they can now see the church steeple out their window!)

This weekend, Leigh claimed that of all the decorating she has done in her new home -- the entryway (with the buck!) was her favorite. Isn't it funny how that happens? Sometimes you just need an outsider's perspective.

Weekend in Rome....Georgia

Ryan and I spent a wonderful weekend in Rome, Georgia visiting our dear friends, Leigh and Ryan (aka, Ryan Two). These two served as amazing hosts from the moment we arrived for brunch on Saturday morning. Not only did we get to spend time with these two...

...and these two....

...but these two!

After brunch, the boys headed off to challenge each other on the golf course while the girls took a tour of the Weldon's newly decorated, GORGEOUS loft (detailed decor post coming later this week) and set off for a relaxing day in Rome.

First up on our agenda? The Chiaha Harvest Fair ("a toe-tappin', cider sippin', fun-for-everyone Arts Festival") to enjoy the beautiful weather and local art.

After the art festival, we poked around several great shops in downtown Rome and enjoyed gelato from Honeymoon Bakery. Most exciting, though, was visiting Leigh's dental office, the Rome Center for Pediatric Dentistry. We are so proud of our Leigh-Leigh!

That evening, we enjoyed delicious venison chili made by our wonderful hosts, drinks on the rooftop terrace of their building, and some dancing at a nearby watering hole.

We wrapped up the weekend in my favorite fashion -- girl talk over coffee in the rooftop sunroom and walking to Sunday brunch at Harvest Moon Cafe.

Healthy Slice of Life: Autumn Spiced Almonds

My friend Brittany has an incredible healthy living blog, A Healthy Slice of Life. I look forward to reading her posts each night as they are delivered to my inbox. She has a great outlook on eating and exercising right, helpful tips, and tasty recipes (including great freezer ready meals for my expectant mom friends out there). Best of all, she is funny, honest, balanced, and completely transparent about her own life. Please check it out!

In addition to her blog, she also has a one month-old precious baby girl. With the new addition on the way, Brittany incorporated a lot of information on her blog about pregnancy, specifically about eating right and preparing for a little bundle of joy, that was both insightful and entertaining. Isn't Hailey precious?

Anyway, the reason I bring up Brittany and her blog....

Yesterday, she made my day...TWICE. First, she gave me a call out in her blog. Being the avid reader that I am, this alone made me smile. You see, on Friday I posted a status update to Facebook touting the amazingness of the new Planter's Pumpkin Spice Almonds my mother bought me as a treat. I am a sucker for all things pumpkin...pumpkin cranberry bread, pumpkin spiced lattes, pumpkin pie, toasted pumpkin seeds... Nothing says fall like a little pumpkin!

Anyway, Brittany saw the post. She "liked" it. (Duh.) And then in true Brittany-style, she showed her readers how to MAKE them at home. Giraffe Baby Shower: Welcome Everett!

This little guy (my precious nephew) surprised everyone by showing up 5 weeks early on December 2, 2010. Apparently, he is not one to miss a party--- his baby shower (or rather, my sister-in-law Paige's baby shower) was scheduled for that weekend on December 6. Since Everett needed to spend a couple of weeks in the NICU developing stronger lungs, the hostesses went ahead with the shower to give mom a nice distraction.
Everett's shower was inspired by his soon-to-be black, white, and yellow giraffe nursery. Paige picked out some killer fabrics for my mom to sew into bedding, curtains, and cushion covers for the rocker.
Guests were welcomed to the shower at Josie's gorgeous home with this door sign created by my mom. She was inspired by a picture she had seen on Etsy and my brother's love of books. She picked up some inexpensive books from the thrift store, a canvas, and a jar of decopage. I love how it turned out.
For the tablecloth, we used some of the fabric that was destined to be used for curtains. (We were able to capitalize on EV's early arrival!) Patty, Kim, Josie, and myself were able to put together a delicious menu of lunch foods...if I do say so myself.

I am normally against silly baby shower games, but I loved this idea from Josie. She wrapped a box and filled it with 20 small "diaper bag items". I created submission sheets on card stock to distribute to guests upon their arrival. Guests filled out the sheet with their guesses throughout the party. Prior to opening gifts, Josie pulled out the items one-by-one from the box. The guest with the highest number right won a $10 Starbucks card. Who doesn't love a good prize?
For decor, we simply hung a clothesline with onesies and giraffe print outs. Patty and Kim made tissue paper puffs in yellow, black, and white to hang from the light fixtures.
The hostesses and Paige -- celebrating a successful shower just days after Everett's surprise arrival!
For a party favor, I made giraffe-shaped sugar cookies using a cookie cutter I found for $1 at Sur la Table. (Love that store.) My mom and grandma helped me ice and package them the night before!

Cheesecake Filled Strawberries

You asked, and you shall receive! Many of you saw a photo of these delectables that I posted to Facebook and requested the recipe. I am embarrassed to share how easy they were-- but here you go:

During our family vacation at the beach in August, my Aunt Lynne introduced us to the refreshingly sweet wonder of the Cheesecake Stuffed Strawberry. She found the recipe on Pinterest and added it to her 1,803 pins. (That's a fact. She's a Master Pinner. Unlike most of us, however, she actually tries many of her pins. Remember this?)

The original source for the recipe is the lovely blog Sugar Derby. I adapted some of her directions (ever so slightly) and made these tasty treats for the Georgia v. Coastal Carolina tailgate.

Tools:

Strawberry Stem Remover: This thing makes life so easy. (Again, thank you, Aunt Lynne!) However, you can use a knife if you want. I like my Chef'n Strawberry Huller. (Available at Williams-Sonoma for $7.95)

Sandwich Size Ziploc Bag

Electric Mixer

Ingredients:

Two cartons of fresh strawberries

8 oz. pkg of light cream cheese, softened

1/2 c. powdered sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla

1 sleeve of graham crackers (optional)

1/2 c. mini chocolate chips (optional)

Wash strawberries and remove stem and core with either the corer or a knife.

With the electric mixer, beat the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla until smooth.

Scoop cream cheese mixture into the ziploc bag and seal-- making sure that all air is removed.

Use scissors to cut the bottom corner of the ziploc bag to create a piping bag. You will only need to cut a tiny opening.

Squeeze the cream cheese filling through the opening to fill each strawberry.

I stopped there, because I was transporting the strawberries on an hour car ride and wanted them to look their best upon arrival-- no smears, uneven distribution, etc. However, you can go on to the next steps if you wish:

Crush graham crackers in another ziploc bag. Dip the filled end of the each strawberry in the crushed graham crackers.

Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave until smooth upon stirring. Use the spoon to drizzle chocolate over the finished strawberries.

Place in refridgerator until chocolate is hardened.

The final step is always the same-- serve and enjoy!

DC Girls Weekend

Last week, my mom and I headed to DC for our annual (well, this was the second year) Girl's Weekend with my Aunt Lynne and cousin, Lauren. We hosted in Atlanta last year -- so it was our turn to travel!

We spent most of our time antique shopping, eating cheese, drinking wine, thrifting, crafting, eating more cheese, drinking more wine, and -- oh yeah -- dodging trees that Hurricane Irene dropped on my aunt & uncle's roof. Check out my pictures from the weekend:

(I will go ahead and apologize for picture quality in advance. We seemed to have a lot of trouble with camera batteries...most of these are iPhone pictures.)

We started out at G Street Fabrics where we found this amazing chalkboard oilcloth fabric. We bought a few yards to cut in thirds long ways and use as table runners at parties. How great will it be to label the food on the actual runner?

Next, we headed to JoAnn's (to get crafting necessities-- part of every good girl's weekend!) and to Goodwill where I found a horse & rider painting (for just $16!) to add to the yet-to-be-started gallery wall in our den.

We refueled with a stop at Cheesetique -- a gourmet cheese boutique / wine & cheese bar. We all had our favorite cheeses and specialty items, but I have mention the Fig & Brie Crostini. Creamy brie, Prosciutto, fresh figs, and a drizzle of honey? AMAZING. Atlanta needs one of these. Stat.

After that-- CRAFT TIME! We made wine bottle gift bags out of old sweater sleeves. The idea came from a Grey Likes Weddings Pinterest pin. We ended up making 12 bags in about 30 minutes!

To wrap up Thursday, Uncle Peter took us on an evening monument "driving" tour. He said driving. We walked. (Honestly, it was refreshing and beautiful to walk around at night.) The best part was getting to see the brand new MLK memorial up close without all of the crowds -- very powerful. We also saw the FDR Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Memorial...

And the WWII memorial. I had not seen this in my previous trips -- and I am glad I first witnessed it at night. It's mesmerizingly beautiful.

Friday, we were up bright and early to head to Leesburg, Virginia for antiquing and wine tasting. The first stop was Lucketts, a store I have been DYING to visit since first hearing about it on Pure Style Home. Love. That's the only word to describe it. I only wish (kind of) that we had driven so that I could haul furniture home. Aunt Lynne bought the picture frame below for just $3! We hope to replicate this photobooth scene at a certain someone's wedding at some point in the future ;)

Before I ever set foot in the store, I fell in love with this sideboard piece. I fell in love with it even more when I saw the price tag. $289! Velvet in the drawers! Are you kidding? Ryan is lucky we didn't drive, or this would have made it's way back to Atlanta to go...somewhere.

Next, we headed to a wine tasting and lunch at Bluemont Vineyard where we had...wine and cheese!
After lunch, we walked through downtown Leesburg and visited Cottage at Leesburg, Four Shabby Chicks, Bees Keeper Cottage, among others. I bought antique maps of Georgia and Tennessee (the hubby's home state) to add to the developing gallery wall in the den.

That night, we packed up a picnic and headed to the Air Force Memorial Concert at the base of the Memorial itself.

Saturday was full of rain as Hurricane Irene descended upon DC. We stayed local and visited the largest, most organized thrift store I have EVER been to in my life. Aunt Lynne and mom bought random items to spray paint black and use for decorative accessories for Halloween as seen on Domestic in the City. Sound weird? I thought so. But check out this 50 cent toy house...perfect for inexpensive DIY Halloween party decor!

Next, we visited Celebrity Delly in Falls Church for lunch and hit up a few more shops. We ended the afternoon celebrating Lauren's friend's birthday at a bead party at Potomac Beads in Old Town Alexandria.

...followed by drinks at a Speakeasy above Eamonn's where we sipped classy cocktails. Of course, we did have to knock on the unmarked door under a pirate flag when the blue light was on to get in...

Then, it was off to bed. Only to be awoken at 12am to a transformer blowing. Thanks, Irene. And then again at 1:30am to THIS:

That's right. Two 100 foot oak trees fell on the house. (Yes, we are all okay. Thank goodness.) Surprisingly, there was very little damage to the house. Probably because Lauren and I held up the tree for Aunt Lynne and Uncle Peter:

With no power throughout the city on our final day, we were left to capture photos of the weekend's loot.

What are we going to do with all of that stuff? Let me show you:

Aunt Lynne used her antique child's potty chair to hold a flower pot on her front porch.

Mom hung the clipped wall piece (adorned with photos and cards) above her library table and used the antique vise to display books.

...and then we flew home to Atlanta-- where there was electricity and hot showers for all. I can't wait for 2012 Girl's Weekend!

After almost a six month hiatus...I'm back. What kept me away?

I took on a new role at work.
I worked two jobs for two months until my replacement could be found.
I got overwhelmed by MBA coursework.
I helped plan and took an 11 day trip to China.
My nephew was born.
We celebrated the holidays...and turning 28.
We shut down the antique booth to focus on the growing design side of the business.
We are toying with the idea of selling some of our vintage finds on Etsy.

From Placemats to Pillows...

Looking for that perfect accent pillow? Check out the placemats at your local home store. A client found these great block print placemats on the clearance rack at Pottery Barn and knew the fabric was the perfect complement for her sofa.

She already had a pillow of the same size she no longer wanted, so we didnt even have to buy a pillow form.

Because I wanted to preserve the border on the edges, I did some experimentation. I tried adding flanges to the sides, but I didn't love the look. (Sorry, I forgot to take a picture!)

In the end, I topstitched close to the finished edges of the placemat on the ends, so the whole border was preserved. I think Jill will be thrilled with her new pillow! The materials were less than $5!

Leigh's "Stock the Shelves" Bridal Luncheon

My Leigh Leigh is getting married this December in Rome, Georgia in what is planned to be a sophisticated Southern holiday wedding. Who is the groom you might ask? The lucky Mr. Ryan Weldon, fondly referred to as "2" in some circles. This renaming was a necessity to avoid confusing him with Ryan 1, my husband :) You may remember my post on the couple's surprise engagement party from last Thanksgiving.

To celebrate Leigh's upcoming nuptials, several of the bridesmaids united forces to host a lovely afternoon luncheon featuring our finest linens, crystal, and china. We used a color palette of Tiffany blue, plum, and silver to give the shower a girly feel and to coordinate with the invitations. Take a look...

Recipe: Cake Pops

Since my last post, I have had several readers and friends ask me to post the recipe for cake pops. You might ask, "What is a cake pop?" They are just that-- a delicious cake-based lollipop. I have to thank my mom for introducing me to these tasty treats, and my dear friend Maggie for conquering my first batch of cake pops with me.

Cake pops are great for parties or any other festive occasion. My friend Jennifer asked about making them as a favor for her daughter's first birthday party-- what a great idea! Simply cover the cake pop with cellophane, add a themed tag that says "thank you", "congratulations", or whatever the occasion may warrant, and tie it off with a pretty ribbon. The end result is a simple and inexpensive, but adorable party favor. An added bonus? Cake pops make for a great display that can add to your overall party decor.

I am almost embarrassed to tell you how easy they are to make. I will tell you, however, that while easy, they are relatively time consuming. I recommend allocating plenty of time if this is your first attempt. These little delicious desserts can be made the day before and stored at room temperature.

What do you need?

- 1 cake made from scratch or from any box cake mix (I opted for the box!)
- 1/2 container of frosting (yep, store bought)
- 2 bags of chocolate candy melts (pick these up at Michaels or Hobby Lobby-- any color will do)
- 1 Tablespoon shortening
- Approximately 50 candy sticks (again, found at Michaels or Hobby Lobby)
- Block of styrofoam large enough to hold 50 cake pops

Directions:

Bake cake according to package instructions. Allow cake to cool completely. Crumble the cooked cake into a large mixing bowl. Once entire cake is crumbled, add the frosting and mix well.

Roll cake mixture into 1-inch balls (each batch makes 35-50 cake pops). Place cake balls into the refrigerator to chill. (This helps keep the ball in one place later in the process.)

Melt the chocolate and place it in a large bowl. Mix shortening into melted chocolate. (This is an important step, because it gives the chocolate a creamier, easier-to-work-with consistency.) Dip the end of one candy stick in the chocolate mixture and then place it into the center of one of the cake dough balls. (This step will keep the cake ball attached to the stick.) Again, return the cake balls to the refrigerator to help the stick set. (This is not a must-- but I think that it helps keep the cake balls from falling off.)

Once chocolate has hardened, dip one side of the cake ball into the chocolate, then spoon chocolate over the uncovered portion of the cake ball. CAREFULLY, tap stick on bowl to remove any excess chocolate. (Maggie and I learned the hard way that if you tap too hard-- the cake ball falls off the stick. The good part? You can taste test those!)

Place cake pop into the styrofoam to set.

See? Easy-peasy.

Want to take it to the next level? Cut the styrofoam to fit in the lid of a copy paper box. Wrap the box top in a fabric that fits the occasion. Spray paint the styrofoam to match, noting that you must use special spray paint that can be used on styrofoam. (I picked mine up at Michaels.)

[Remember that football field? Here, I wrapped the box in burlap for Kristen and Joe's fall-themed wedding shower. Perfect!]

Before & After: Family Room Side Table

Where to start after so much time away from blogging? How about with a simple before and after picture of our new side table from August. The before picture shows a black three tier glass side table that I bought from Crate & Barrel shortly after graduating college. It has a matching coffee table--- and it was love at first sight. The pair worked great in my post-college apartments and college-- but the straight lines and black color just really don't fit with my post-marriage decorating style. I needed a warmer look for my family room --- something that would contribute to the comfortable, classic "English Library" look I am going for in the family room. What did I find?

I found a great deal at the Pottery Barn outlet on the Map side table (and matching coffee table). I love the warm brown finish. The shelf still allow the hubby to have his unsightly surround sound receiver/speakers, while the drawers provide great storage for books, magazines, and my favorite...remotes!

Thoughts?

Bookshelf Painting Project: Before & After

It was a busy weekend at the Edmonds' household (or should I say the Edmonds Inn?):

Our friend Leigh stayed with us for a weekend visit and wedding dress fitting. Ryan's brother Chad and his girlfriend Carly came in town to help us with some projects around the house (bookshelf painting, electric dog fence installation, pressure washing, stripping the deck, etc...whew!) Chad's friend and his girlfriend from Knoxville crashed at our house for the night after the Braves game on Friday

I got up early Saturday morning to be sure that I had time to complete my bookshelf transformation, as promised. I am so pleased with the results. Check out the project in pictures below:

Before:

I started by clearing off all of the accessories and then removing the shelves themselves.

I then sanded the wall, dusted, and taped off the edges.

Ta da! I applied two coats of a soft green paint.

After:
(It's hard to see the green in this picture. I think I used the flash. I will try to snap a few more. It's a subtle change-- but you can tell in person. It looks great!)

Weekend Project: Painting the Bookshelves

The paint is purchased. There is no turning back now! Over a year ago, my mom suggested painting the back of our living room bookshelves to add a bit of color to the room. Doing so would also highlight the books, knickknacks, and the like on display in this focal point of our home.

I have gone back and forth-- and back and forth-- over whether we should do it. What if I hate it? What if the color is off? I have finally realized that if I hate it I am only out the $13.09 that I spent on paint last night at Lowe's. I can paint it back. No. Big. Deal.

So...wish me luck! I will post before and after pictures once it's complete!

Another's Abode: Closet Organization

My most popular, talked about post to date was about my pantry organization project. Apparently, my readers are either a) super organized or b) wish they were. In honor of your desire for more clean content, I offer you images of a recent closet organization mission taken on by my cousin in Washington DC. Lauren has a beautiful two bedroom condo in Arlington, Virginia. Like me, Lauren embraces organization and gets excited by things like drawer organizers, wicker baskets (the perfect wedding gift--thanks, Lauren!), and plastic tote containers. Her high? The Container Store. Unlike me, Lauren actually acts on her love of organization.

Scott's Buy: Ship Clock

Those of you who know me well know that I love nautical-inspired decor. Buoys? Got 'em. Large ship replica? Done. Therefore, you will not be surprised by how excited I was to find an antique ship clock for sale at Scott's last weekend. (I was even more excited by the $22 price tag!) This clock was mine from the moment I saw it:

{Note: It was an added benefit that I found it at the booth of some friends, Cheryl and Susan, and was able to support their new venture!)

At first, I planned to hang it between the windows in my dining room. But alas, it was too small and looked insignificant. I looked for wall space in the living room/office, but the spots just weren't right. My mom suggested I try placing the clock on the second shelf of my three-tiered glass coffee table. I LOVE it! It looks great and is such an interesting piece to show through. Now, I just need to work on updating the rest of the accessories in/on the table.

These pictures do not do justice for how great the clock looks in its new spot!

Where Should the Foo Dogs Live?

Here I am smiling with excitement over one of my purchases from Scott's this weekend. While these Foo dog statues are not true antiques, they are a cool accessory that remind me of my travels to Asia for work. (Plus, I have seen them all over the design blogs recently, like here, here, and here.)

According to Wikipedia (the ultimate source of information!), Foo dogs, or Chinese guardian lions, are a common representation of the lion in pre-modern China, which is believed to have powerful mythic protective powers that has traditionally stood in front of Chinese Imperial palaces (like the Forbidden City in Beijing where I saw them!), temples, emperors' tombs, government offices, and the homes of government officials and the wealthy from the Han Dynasty (206BC-AD 220), until the end of the empire in 1911. The lions are always created in pairs, with the male playing with a ball and the female with a cub. (Sounds about right!)

My question to you is this:
WHERE SHOULD THE FOO DOGS LIVE IN MY HOUSE?

On our desk in the living room?
(Note: Be on the look out for big changes to this area of our house in the future- we've got plans!)

On the console table in the dining room?
(Also note: China cabinet coming in the next month. Yay!)

On the bookshelves in the family room?
(Note: I have plans to paint the back of the shelves a soft green.)

Guest Blogger: Before & After

My parents have been helping my brother Eric and sister-in-law Paige prepare their house to go on the market this fall. My mom was kind enough to write a guest post about one of the most recent projects. The change was simple, but it made a huge difference. Check out her post below:

My son and daughter-in-law were thrilled to find out they are expecting their first child in January. (Editors note: Babies everywhere in my family!) However, with the eminent arrival of their bundle of joy came the realization that their cute little house in Grant Park is not big enough for all the baby paraphernalia that accompanies this small wonder. So, Ken and I (along with Paige's parents) spent Saturday working on projects to get the house ready to put on the market in September.

My assignment was to tackle this door in the sun room:

The previous owners had used some type of paint to give it a faux stained glass look. (Sorry, I decided to document this part way through the project-- should have removed my trash bad and bike stand before taking the photo). After some experimentation, I found the most effective method was to scrape off some of the paint with a chisel and then spray window cleaner down behind it. Removing the colorful paint took several hours.

Allowing more light into the room and providing privacy were the two goals we had in mind for the window treatment. A wooden blind to match the others in the room was not feasible because of the two curious puppies! After some research, I decided to experiment with white window frosting spray. Again, I moved the bike rack and trash bag but forgot to take the picture before I taped one window!

Here is what the project looked like from the inside and outside! The can of spray paint was less than $5.00. If I hadn't had to remove the old paint, this project would have taken only about an hour. Beware, the fumes are very strong!

Watch for further updates as we continue to stage this room and the rest of the house over the summer.

I don't normally shop at JCPenney, but a fellow blogger recently reported finding a few furniture steals on their website. Naturally, I went over to www.jcpenney.com to check it out. I selected Home Store, right there on the front page was this beauty for just $69! If I had a small patio like at my old condo, I would buy this instantly. Need a seating area for a small space? This set is extremely versatile and so sweet.

Crate+Barrel Sale

I walked across the street to Lenox yesterday at lunch to run a few errands-- the battery in Ryan's watch needed to be replaced and I had a disposable camera from our anniversary trip to Mexico to be developed. (I know what you are thinking-- "Disposable camera? Didn't those disappear in the late 90s?" The answer: You would think. However, when you drop your camera on the tile floor on day one of your vacation, you are left with no other options to document your amazing trip.) Anyway...

While I was waiting, I stumbled into Crate+Barrel and discovered that they are having an incredible sale right now. Check out some of the things I found on sale! While I refrained from making any purchases due to the expensive run I have had with technology (I failed to mention that I also dropped our laptop a week later) -- I recommend you go in and take a look!

I love these white pillows. The fabric has a rich texture but is still soft. At $14.95, these still might make their way into my home.
I am a neutrals girl. I am trying to slowly bring color into my house. BUT, I think nothing is more relaxing and soothing than a neutral tone-on-tone bathroom. Check out this taupe and white shower curtain on sale for just $24.95.

Love. That's the only way to describe how I feel about these gray woven side chairs. So chic. So affordable at only $99.95.
You already know I love birds. And the husband doesn't. But how cute is this little cement bird for the deck? He is only $4.95. Again, this guy might make his way into my basket and onto my deck. (And into my heart.)

Hugh & Audrey: Fix & Mix Shower!

The amazing Emily McCarthy of Emma J designs has done it again. She produced an incredibly chic invitation for the shower Ryan, myself, and some of the other groomsmen and significant others are hosting for our dear friends (and soon-to-be newlyweds), Audrey and Hugh!

The theme for this couples' shower is "Fix & Mix", or tools and kitchen, for those of you not up on your showerspeak. We have planned the shower to appeal to the male and female crowds by making it a cookout-- but with class!

Ryan and I (but mostly Ryan) have been in super-landscaping mode to prepare. The deck rails are painted. The decking has been cleaned. The house has been pressure washed. The stone stairway to the backyard was put in. The lighting was added to the landscaping. A stepping stone path leading the deck was installed. The landscaping was weeded and mulched. Whew! (Pictures of those projects to come...)

Check out the invitation below! The shower is this Saturday night-- so I am in full food prep mode. With this crowd, it's sure to be a good time!

Guest Blogger: Nana's Nursery

I am excited to feature my first guest blogger! My mother and business partner at Chapin Group, Wendy Teusink, became a "nana" for the first time last Monday. She is in the process of converting my childhood bedroom (get ready, this is hilarious) into a nursery for Addyson and all future grandchildren. Check out her progress below:

With the arrival of my first grandchild, Addyson Rae Borngesser, on Monday, May 24, it is time for me to convert Ashley's old bedroom into a nursery/guest room. (Yes, this was supposed to be completed before her arrival!)

With Ashley's first anniversary next week and her ten year high school reunion next year, I think it is finally time to redecorate her childhood bedroom. Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures of it when it was first decorated. Many items from the original design went off to college and to her first home (and to goodwill!). Leaving what you see here:

Really, it was cute in the beginning. I swear! Yes, all the trim is painted purple, thank goodness for Kilz. Time to part company with some of these childhood treasures! They will be headed for Ebay soon.

Pictures of old boyfriends and cheerleading days are probably best moved to the photo album. It's probably best to move the extra bolts of fabric back into my studio. The doll house and fire station I found at the Pottery Barn Outlet were my first "Nana purchases" and will stay in the room.

The trundle bed will go back underneath to make room for a crib. I guess all those boxes of Ashley's things stored underneath will be making the trip to her new house!

I'm back! My husband and I celebrated our one year anniversary (a little early) by spending a week soaking up sun in Mexico. I came back fully revitalized and ready to share more of my musings with you.

In honor of the upcoming nuptials of Laura Zimmerman and Christopher Weekley this weekend, I want to feature images from the Desserts & Decor shower hosted by her lovely bridesmaids, featured below (minus Amy, MOH extraordinaire). You might remember the invitation from this shower.

To keep with the theme, we served many miniature delectable treats and hosted a bellini bar. Laura's wedding colors are blue and yellow-- so we incorporated this color palette throughout the decor by using blue and white linens and yellow floral arrangements. Both the beverage table and the food table had a large spray of yellow forsythia cut from my parents' yard. We also created decorative flower balls using florist foam (Oasis) and yellow carnations.

I apologize for the lack of posts from me over the past several weeks. I have been completely swamped with school, work, planning showers, throwing bachelorette parties, and getting ready to go on vacation with my hubby on Friday! Plus, I have found myself a little uninspired about what to post. Our (by our, I mean, Ryan's) home projects have been less than exciting lately: fixing the drainage problem in the backyard, installing a new ceiling fan, etc... While necessary, you don't want to read about that. I need inspiration-- so please send it my way!

A Borngesser Baby Shower

I co-hosted a baby shower for my sister-in-law, Tammy, a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, I my camera battery was dead and the charger was nowhere to be found. Boo. I had hoped to document all of the details of the day to share with you. In the absence of my camera, my aunt was designated the official photographer, but I have yet to receive the pictures. (Ahemmmm.....)

Fortunately, my mom snapped a few pictures from the event that I can post!

It is difficult to see in this picture, but check out the adorable baby sock corsage my mom made for the mother-to-be. Love the lace. Love it.

The sex of Baby Borngesser is a mystery until his/her (but really his) arrival, scheduled for May 23. That being the case, we decided to go with a gender neutral yellow and blue rubber duck theme. The duckies loved floating in this champagne punch!

My co-host, Beige, created this adorable guessing game that also served as an eye-catching centerpiece for the drink table. She made tags that said "Boy" or "Girl" and asked guests to fill out the back with their best guess of arrival date, height, and time. We gathered some branches from my yard for the guests to hang completed cards from. Here is the "Girl" display:

The food table was dressed with a light blue and white toile tablecloth with a pale yellow and white polka dot fabric piece serving as a festive runner. For a centerpiece, we used two cupcake stands filled with rubber duck cupcakes. (Lemon cupcakes with blue cream cheese frosting, of course.) My mom and I hunted down those 30 mini rubber ducks from stores all over Atlanta! On either side of the cupcake stands, we displayed primary-colored vintage (read: my old) toys down the length of the runner.

At every shower I try to use at least one new recipe. This shower? The recipe was for mini BLT bites. They were an absolute hit. Look for the recipe on this week's Friday recipe!

My sidebar was adorned with this adorable rubber duck diaper cake handmade by my mom. The ribbon tied with bows had a little rubber duck pattern that fit our theme perfectly.

All-in-all, the shower was a complete success!
